Rocky Mountain Vacations

Colorado Rocky Mountains & Rocky Mountain VacationsA family vacation in the Rockies is one you and your children will never forget.

I first saw the Rocky Mountains at the age of 14 when I came to Colorado for a week of summer camp. What an adventure! For the first time in my life, I went white water rafting, repelling and four wheeling. I also rode horses, which was a whole different wonder from the crest of a mountain. There is nothing like stargazing at night in the mountains and feeling like you are such a small part of the bigger world.

One week was definitely not enough, so I went back two years later to work for part of a summer outside Buena Vista, CO at Trail West (a Young Life property). After that, I spent three summers working in Northern Colorado at Cherokee Park Ranch and a winter at Woodspur Lodge in Winterpark. While I will never be a native "Coloradoan", a part of me feels like I am coming home when I get that first glimpse of the foothills from I-70 heading west!

Rocky Mountain VacationsIndependent Drive Vacations: Many people with young children like to have the flexibility to go at their own pace. I can help organize a Rocky Mountain Family Vacation that is just right for your family. A house rental in Estes Park might be the perfect Rocky Mountain family vacation, with its easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park. During the summer, you can drive to the top of Trail Ridge Road. My six year old told me, "Mom, you can see the whole world from up here!" The drive down will introduce your kids to a variety of wildlife including deer, elk and mountain goats. In the city of Estes Park, you will have access to all the things that kids love from ice cream shops to putt-putt golf and bungee trampolines.

Elk in the Colorado Rocky MountainsGuest Ranches: In my time working at a guest ranch I met hundreds of guests and I can honestly say that I have never met an unhappy guest. We would have people come back year after year because they said it was their best vacation ever. Guest ranches are the "all inclusive" of the Rocky Mountains. During your week stay, you will be provided with a horse to ride each day, if you wish. You will also have other ranch activities included, such as nature hikes, fly fishing, swimming, trap shooting, etc. There are often off-site activities offered as well, such as pack trips, white water rafting or a van trip to other tourist destinations in the area. All meals are included and offer something for everyone, even the pickiest of eaters! Most guest ranches also offer children's programs with activities designed for various age groups. (This allows parents to have some free time as well!) During the evenings, you'll likely find yourself at a square dance, hay ride or singing by the campfire. You can participate in as much or as little as you like, making this a perfect family vacation package! Learn more about our favorite Rocky Mountain Ranch.
